DESCRIPTION

I am an easily recognizable fish as my body resembles that of a snake! And just like him, I undulate to move through the water. I am usually brownish-green, yellowish or gray.  Among eels females are clearly larger than males on occasions even more than doubling in size.

Scientists still find it difficult to understand our method of reproduction. In the fall, aged between 6 and 12 years, the females leave the fresh water to return to the sea whereas males, aged up to 10 years, do the same from brackish or salty estuaries. We then cease to feed ourselves and die after spawning.

Our situation is worrisome in Québec; the destruction of our habitats, notably with the addition of turbines for hydroelectric centers, prevent our reproduction. However, thanks to the installation of fishways and ladders on certain dams as well as the implementation of fishing restrictions, our situation is improving.
