With dimensions that can run up to 20 cm in length, I am part of the “big minnow” category! Other than my size, one recognizes me by my high and flattened body, not to mention my yellowing gilded to silver coloration.
As for other minnows and shiners, our breeding occurs from spring to summer. During this period, we are sneaky little devils ... Sometimes females will lay eggs in a Largemouth Bass nest, thereby increasing our reproductive success as predators tackle these big fish much less than us!
Our species is very common in Québec and in the Maritimes. We usually live in large groups.
