SUNFISH

LEPOMIS GIBBOSUS

Back

DESCRIPTION

I am one of the most colorful fish in Québec! In fact, my face is covered with bue lines, my body is dotted with rust patches and by stomach can go from yellow to orange. My body is high and strongly compressed laterally.

Our breeding season occurs in summer. Males prepare nests that they fiercely defend against intruders. It is not uncommon to find males side by side busy defending their nest. Females are then courted by males. Each female can visit one or many males.

We are very common, even abundant, in the waters of Québec.
